El asma es una enfermedad crónica del sistema respiratorio caracterizada por presentar unas vías respiratorias hiperactivas que se vuelven más finas disminuyen de forma ocasional y reversible por contraer su musculatura lisa o por ensanchamiento de su mucosa al inflamarse y producir mucosidad, por lo general en respuesta a uno o más factores desencadenantes como la exposición a un medio ambiente inadecuado (frío, húmedo o alergénico), el ejercicio o esfuerzo en pacientes hiper-reactivos, o el estrés emocional. En los niños los desencadenantes más frecuentes son las enfermedades comunes como aquellas que causan el resfriado común.

La acupuntura es muy efectiva en el tratamiento de los ataques agudos de la alergia que son tan frecuente durante la primavera.
En la Medicina Tradicional China hay dos factores principales en el asma:
Los Pulmones son los órganos Yin más externos de todo el cuerpo. La mucosa bronquial podría entenderse como una extensión de la piel. Así que al igual que el Viento invade la piel puede invadir los bronquios, alojarse en ellos y producir los broncoespasmos. Esto solo puede suceder si el paciente tiene de fondo una deficiencia de los sistemas del Qi Defensivo del Pulmón y los Riñones que permite que el viento se aloje en los bronquios durante largos periodos de tiempo.
Lo primero que debemos realizar es una correcta diferenciación de síndromes en la consulta para determinar el tipo de alergia que padece el paciente teniendo muy en cuenta si hay antecedentes familiares.
Durante el tratamiento también se tratan los eccemas que suelen presentar los pacientes asmáticos.
